On October 15, 1942, the destroyer USS Meredith, while delivering ammunition and fuel to the troops on Guadalcanal, was sunk by Japanese carrier planes. For four harrowing days, the survivors wallowed in oily waters combating dehydration, injuries, burns, strafing by enemy planes, and shark attacks. Of the 329 men, only 96 survived. The story of these heroic men is one of the most dramatic to come out of World War II.
